No Giveaways

If you are interested in buying used Federal surplus property, there is one thing you should know up front. The Government expects to receive a fair price. Unless you are willing to pay fair market value, you would be wasting your time at a sale. Every item has an undisclosed minimum price and is seldom sold for less. Stories about the $100 yacht or Mercedes car are pure fiction.

As a taxpayer, you paid for these items when they were new. GSA wants to receive the best possible return on your tax dollar when they are sold.

No Guarantees

We will give you a chance to inspect sale property before making an offer, and we urge you to do so. While we try to point out deficiencies if we know about them, an item may still have faults, and we do not guarantee condition.

How We Sell

We sell Government surplus property in the Heartland Region mostly by auctions and on-line bidding. Our sales are open to the public and everyone is welcome to bid. No preference is given to any individuals or groups, including veterans, senior citizens, and religious organizations.

Payment and Removal

You must pay for and remove your purchases within the time prescribed for each sale, and you cannot remove merchandise before you pay. The Government does not provide any form of financing.

Acceptable forms of payment generally include cash, money orders, travelers checks, cashier's checks, credit union checks, Government checks, and personal checks accompanied by a bank letter guaranteeing payment (Sample Bank Letter) . VISA, MasterCard, American Express or Novus System- Discover Card, Bravo Card & Private Issue credit cards are also accepted for most sales.  Certified checks and bank drafts are NOT acceptable.

Removal is your responsibility; GSA will not provide shipping and handling. If you fail to pay and remove by the deadline, the Government will take action to collect damages from you of $200 or 20 percent of the purchase price, whichever is greater.

How We Advertise

We run ads in local newspapers and sometimes post notices in public buildings. Highly specialized sales and others that might generate interest nationwide are advertised in national newspapers, trade journals, and periodicals.

You may access the various sale information by one of the following methods:

We also maintain mailing lists for frequent purchasers of Government surplus property sold at auction sales. Catalogs are not mailed out on the on-line bid items.  To be placed on the mailing list for auctions only, you may do one of the following:

  • E-Mail: R06-sales@gsa.gov to request an application be mailed to you. (Be sure to send your complete US Postal Service mailing address.) or see last option for adding your email address for automatic updates.
  • Write: GSA Sales (6FBD-P), 1500 E Bannister Rd, Rm 1102,  Kansas City,  MO   64131-3088. (Be sure to send your complete US Postal Service mailing address.)
  • Call 816-823-3700 and ask for a mailing list application & any current auction sale catalogs.
  • The GSA Heartland Regional Sales office has started a new and quick way to stay abreast of sales events in the region. Right now you can receive catalogs of sales delivered to you via your email.  We are offering the emailing of four different kinds of sales catalogs:

R6FLEETSALES  (Fleet Sales – The sales of GSA Fleet Vehicles)

R6SALES  (On-line Bid & Sealed Bid type sales  – Sales for the region 5/6 surplus items)

R6AUCTIONS  (Misc Personal Property – The public auction sales of all commodities)

R6OTHERINFO  (Other information – This option is for providing non-sales related information that might come up)

The process to be put on the list is simple. All you have to do is email a request to Listserv@LISTSERV.gsa.gov. The text of the message should include the type of sales catalogs you want, ie: "subscribe R6FLEETSALES" and your first and last name. If you don’t want to use your name just use anonymous.

This is not a commitment for life. If at sometime in the future you should decide you don’t want to be on the mailing list the process to be dropped is just as simple. To unsubscribe to any of the lists you just need to send an email to: Listserv@LISTSERV.gsa.gov. The text of your message should say sign off with the list type ie: "signoff R6FLEETSALES"
